Kershaw Black Chive - 1600BLK
Made in the USA

The Black Chive isn't Kershaw's usual matte-black knife. This one has a DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coating that they've polished to a handsome shine for striking good looks. In fact, when it was first introduced, it was recognized as the Blade Show's Most Innovative American Design of 2005.

With its less-than-two-inch blade, the Black Chive is a small knife, which makes it perfect for pocket, pack, purse, or briefcase carry. But just because it's small doesn't mean this Chive isn't powerful. In fact, it's perfect for just about any light-to-medium duty tasks you'd care to ask it to do. To ensure this handy little blade is always ready when you need it, the Black Chive is equipped with SpeedSafe assisted opening. Just pull back on the ambidextrous blade protrusion or push on the thumbstud and the blade moves out of the handle, ready for use. The high-carbon blade steel offers good edge retention and excellent corrosion resistance. The polished DLC coating enhances corrosion resistance even more.

For safety, the Black Chive has two locking systems. The frame lock secures the blade open so it can't accidentally close during use. And to ensure that it won't accidentally open during transport, the Black Chive is also equipped with a Tip-Lock slider to lock the blade closed when folded. In pure stainless steel, both blade and handle are easy to clean and maintain.

Features of the Kershaw Black Chive 1600BLK

Blade Material: 420HC Steel
This modified 420 steel has higher amounts of carbon and chromium to boost hardenability and corrosion resistance. It is an excellent everyday steel: tough, corrosion resistant, easy to sharpen and takes a good edge.

Blade Finish: Polished DLC Coating
DLC stands for Diamond-Like Carbon and, indeed, DLC coatings display properties similar to those of a natural diamond, notably hardness, wear resistance, and reduced friction. The benefits of such a coating are obvious when it comes to knives. The coating adds beauty, is environmentally friendly, and offers excellent wear and corrosion resistance.

Handle Material: DLC Coated 410 Stainless Steel
An alloy of iron and carbon, most steel also has additional elements alloyed in it to enhance specific characteristics. As a handle material, steel is strong and attractive.

SpeedSafe
SpeedSafe is a patented system that assists the user to smoothly open any SpeedSafe knife with a manual push on the blade's thumb stud or pull back on the blade protrusion. SpeedSafe is built into many of Kershaw's best-selling knives.

Flipper
May be used on either manual or assisted opening knives. The "flipper" is a protrusion on the back of the blade that the user can pull back on, or flip, in order to move the blade easily out of the handle.

Frame Lock
In a frame lock knife, the knife handle, its "frame," consists of two plates of material on either side of the blade. To ensure a secure lock up, one or both of these plates is usually metal. When the knife is opened, the metal side of the frame, the lockbar, butts up against the backend of the blade (the tang) and prevents the blade from closing. To close a frame lock knife, the user pushes the frame to the side, unblocking the blade, and folds the blade back into the handle. Frame locks are manufactured so that the locking side of the frame is angled toward the interior of the knife, creating a bias toward the locked position. Both the blade tang and the lockbar are precisely angled so they fit together for a secure, reliable lockup. The thickness of the frame material blocking the blade open makes the frame lock extremely sturdy.

Tip-Lock
The tip-lock is a simple slider that, when engaged, ensures the blade will not accidentally open. It's especially helpful in cases where the knife might be juggled in a briefcase, backpack, or purse.

Single-Position Pocketclip
The pocketclip is in a fixed position on the knife handle. Usually it is positioned for tip-down, right-handed carry, though this may vary. You can remove the clip completely, if you prefer.

Made in the USA
This knife is made in Kershaw's Tualatin, Oregon manufacturing facility by skilled Kershaw knifemakers.
