Cold Steel has become an innovator in the industry. They have implemented a large number of changes to their knives over the last three decades, most of which . Examples of this can be seen in their Tanto blades and the use of checkered Kraton handles. Both of which, as Cold Steel states, have become "industry wide hallmarks of quality and sophistication."

A number of different grades of steel are used in their products, all of them being incredibly strong and able to maintain an excellent cutting edge. The most common forms of steel found in Cold Steel knives, although several others are used, are VG-1 stainless steel, 1055 carbon steel, and AUS 8A stainless steel.

VG-1, or V Gold 1, stainless steel is a newer material in comparison to the other grades of steel used by Cold Steel. It will have a carbon content between 0.95% and 1.05%. This makes it a high carbon steel and incredibly strong. Although not all high carbon steels can be classified as "stainless," this is a blade that can. VG-1 stainless steel is known for its corrosion and abrasion resistance which stems from the bonds created by the Chromium and Molybdenum present in the blades.

1055 carbon steel actually has a lower carbon content then the VG-1 stainless steel, and could be classified as a medium carbon blade. The content is typically between 0.50% and 0.60% carbon. This results in great impact resistance and should be considered when strength is the most important factor for your Cold Steel blade.

You might find a lot of Cold Steel folding knives that are labeled with AUS 8A stainless steel. This is another high carbon steel that is very hard and has great edge retention.

Keep in mind that any steel can actually become "stained" if not properly cared for or exposed to tough conditions. A steel is made "stainless" by the presence of Cromium, but this also reduces their edge and overall strength. You will notice Cold Steel knives are made from high carbon, low cromium steel that is When you browse the products here at Blade Center, we label the steel used in each Cold Steel product.
